Rural India Beats Urban Sector: Census

The Statesman,
13 June 2006.

ENTERPRENEURSHIP

In terms of entrepreneurship, rural India has outshone the much touted urban centers of the country, as the provisional results of the fifth economic census (1998- 2005) revealed that villages account for 61.3 per cent of the countries industrial units compared to just 38.7 per cent in towns and cities.

The provisional census document, released today by the Union minister for statistics and programme implementation, Mr. G. K. Vasan, notes that Tamil Nadu was top among states with a number of Industrial units while Maharastra was the largest employer with 1.18 crore jobs.

Gujurat, supposed to be an economically advanced state, is conspicuously missing from the list of topers in the census.

Even in average annual growth in employment, rural areas fared batter than urban areas with 3.33 per cent, respectively. The share of Urban and rural area in total employment in percentage is 49 and 51 respectively.

While releasing the documents, Mr. Vasan said, “We have collected data from the largest number of enterprises and contacted 21.1 crore households.”

Andhra pradesh, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal together account for 50 per cent of the total enterprises in the country.
